Description
Hayes Cottage is a cottage dating from around the mid-17th century, likely altered in the early 18th and extended in the late 20th century. It is constructed of plastered cob walls with a gabled thatch roof. There are two brick stacks, one at the left gable end and a more recent axial stack. The original plan consisted of two rooms; entry was into the larger room to the left, which was heated by an end stack, with a smaller, unheated service room to its right. A 1708 datestone above the front door likely marks an early 18th-century modernisation. A late 20th-century extension was added to the right-hand end, matching the original style, and another stack was added.
The front of the house presents an asymmetrical three-window facade with 20th-century single, double, and triple-light casement windows. A 19th-century plank front door is positioned to the left of centre, with an inscribed stone bearing the date 1708 above it. A glazed porch, also of 20th-century origin, is situated on the right-hand extension.
Inside the original part of the house, the room to the right features a chamfered axial beam supported at the left-hand end by a heavy granite post with chamfered edges. The left-hand room contains chamfered and hollow step-stopped ceiling beams. There is an open fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel. The roof trusses are simple, straight principals with lapped and pegged collars.
