Description
Lower Skellies Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 17th century, possibly with earlier origins. It features a 20th-century addition with plastered cob walls and a hipped thatch roof. The building has two rendered axial stacks, with the left-hand stack likely made of stone rubble. The layout consists of a three-room-and-through-passage plan, where the lower room on the left has a fireplace that backs onto the passage. The room to the right of the passage, presumably the hall, is heated by a stack at its higher end, while an unheated dairy is located beyond it.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has four windows, including early to mid 20th-century one, two, and three-light casements. There is a 19th-century or early 20th-century gabled open-fronted porch to the left of centre, featuring a decorative barge-board and a part-glazed door. A probable 18th-century barn extends from the left-hand end, with a lower hipped corrugated iron roof, a first-floor loading hatch, and a central doorway below it.
Inside, the left-hand room has a cambered wooden lintel over the fireplace, which is chamfered with hollow step stops. The roof timbers on the first floor are encased, and access to the roof space is not available, though these timbers may be of interest.
