Description

ASHREIGNEY RIDDLECOMBE SS 61 SW 6/33 Lower Skellies Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse. Circa early to mid C17 possibly with earlier origins. C20 addition plastered cob walls. Hipped thatch roof. 2 rendered axial stacks, the left-hand one is probably stone rubble. Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan, lower room to the left has fireplace backing onto the passage. Room to right of passage presumably hall, is heated by stack at its higher end. Unheated dairy beyond it. C20 addition at rear of left-hand end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front of early-mid C10 1,2 and 3-light casements, C19 or early gabled open-fronted porch to left of centre with decorative barge-board and part-glazed door behind. Probably C18 barn extending from left-hand end with lower hipped corrugated iron roof, 1st floor loading hatch and central doorway below it. Interior: left-hand room has cambered wooden lintel to fireplace, chamfered with hollow step stops. Roof timbers are encased on 1st floor and there is no access is the roof-space. They may be of interest, however.
