Description

Hawkdown Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and was modernised in the early 20th century. It has plastered cob walls and a thatch roof that is hipped to the left and gabled at the right end. There are two brick stacks: one axial stack towards the left-hand end and another at the right gable end. The building has a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end on the right heated by a gable-end fireplace. The axial stack at the higher end of the hall also serves the inner room. An outshut from the late 19th or early 20th century has been added behind the higher end.

The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical front with five windows. On the first floor, there are four 19th-century three-light casements, along with a 20th-century three-light casement to their left. The ground floor also has a 20th-century three-light casement. There is an early 20th-century gabled wooden lattice porch to the right of centre, which has a 20th-century plank door behind it. The first-floor windows have eyebrows in the thatch above.

Inside, the fireplace in the left-hand room has a cambered narrow chamfered wooden lintel. No other original features were visible on the ground floor, and the first floor was inaccessible at the time of the survey. Early roof timbers may still be present, and other features are likely concealed.
