Description
Staple Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the mid-17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features rendered cob walls and a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the left end and hipped at the right end. There is an axial brick stack. The layout consists of a three-room plan, with the left-hand room being unheated. An axial stack between the central and right-hand rooms serves both of these spaces. Originally, there may have been a baffle entry leading into a lobby in front of the stack, but the current entry is into the larger central room, which was the hall. A 20th-century staircase has been inserted in front of the stack, and a 20th-century lean-to has been added along the rear wall.
The exterior has two storeys and features an asymmetrical front with three windows, which include 20th-century one and two-light casements without glazing bars. There is also a large late 20th-century conservatory or porch at the center of the front wall.
Inside, the right-hand room contains a fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has run-out stops, dressed rubble jambs, and a shallow shelf at the rear. The central room has rough, closely spaced ceiling beams. An original chamfered wooden doorframe with a peaked head connects the central room to the left-hand room. On the first floor, the feet of substantial straight principal rafters, which may date from the 17th century, are visible, although further examination was not possible due to limited access to the roof space at the time of inspection.
