Description
Highdown is a house that may have originally been a pair of cottages, likely built in the early 18th century, with an addition from the late 19th or early 20th century. It has plastered cob walls and a hipped thatch roof, with a central brick axial stack.
The house has a baffle entry plan in front of the central axial stack, with heated rooms on either side and possibly small service rooms at each end. The exterior is two storeys high and features a symmetrical front with four windows, which include small-paned one and two-light casements. Most of the windows are from the 20th century, except for the right-hand window on the first floor, which dates to the 19th century and has H-L hinges. There is a central 20th-century porch with a four-panelled door, and a small outbuilding leans against the left-hand end.
Inside, the house shows features from a later 19th-century modernization, but these may be hiding original elements. Highdown maintains a very attractive traditional appearance.
