Description

Ivy Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with possibly an earlier core, and was refurbished around 1975. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a stone rubble stack topped with 20th-century brick and a thatched roof. The cottage has a one-room plan and is built onto the northern end of Trixes, being wider and taller and projecting slightly forward from it. The stack is located in the right (northern) gable end.

The cottage has two storeys and a one-window front featuring 19th-century casements with rectangular panes of leaded glass, along with another similar window on the left return. The right gable end has an irregular two-window front of 20th-century casements, which includes a small reset 17th-century oak two-light window with a chamfered mullion on the left end. The other ground floor window, located roughly in the centre, blocks the original doorway, with the present door situated in the rear wall.

Inside, the cottage displays plain carpentry details and features a large rubble fireplace with a plain oak lintel. The roof is supported by purlins between the gable end walls. There is a possibility that Ivy Cottage was once a barn or part of a barn, as the owners have noted that the internal wall plaster runs continuously from the ground to the top of the wall. Ivy Cottage complements the adjoining Trixes attractively.
