Description

Gribbles Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a cob stack topped with 20th-century brick and a thatched roof. The cottage has a two-room plan, facing south, with a larger room on the right (eastern) side that features an end stack. At the rear, there is a 20th-century service outshot and garage. The building is two storeys high and has an irregular three-window front, featuring variously sized 20th-century casements with glazing bars. To the right of the centre, there is a 20th-century door with a contemporary gabled porch that has a thatched roof. The roof is gable-ended on the left and half-hipped on the right.

Inside, the cottage retains most of its original features. The two rooms are separated by a full-height cob crosswall. The larger right room has a plain chamfered crossbeam, and the rubble fireplace includes an oak lintel with a roughly chamfered soffit, featuring a cloam oven behind a late 19th-century cast iron door. The original stairs from the smaller room lead to each chamber, and the stair head is boxed in with late 17th-century oak small field panelling. The front of the smaller bedroom displays moulded rails and muntins, with panels that have similar chiselled curvilinear patterns. Although the roof space is inaccessible, the feet of what are likely original A-frame trusses can be seen. Notably, there are large blocked opposing doorways on the ground floor, suggesting that the cottage may have been converted from an earlier barn.
