Description
COLEBROOKE COLEFORD SS 70 SE 3/128 Gribbles Cottage
GV II
Cottage. Mid-late C17. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof. 2-room plan cottage facing south and larger right (eastern) room with end stack. C20 service outshot and garage to rear. 2 storey. Irregular 3-window front of similar style but variously sized C20 casements with glazing bars. C20 door right of centre with contemporary gabled and thatch-roofed porch. Roof gable-ended to left and half-hipped to right. Interior retains most original features. 2 rooms separated by full height cob crosswal . Large right room has plain chamfered crossbeam. Rubble fireplace has oak lintel with roughly chamfered soffit and includes a cloam oven behind late C19 cast iron door. Original stairs from smaller room divide to each chamber and stair head is boxed in with late C17 oak small field panelling. The front, exposed in smaller bedroom, has moulded rails and muntins and the panels have similar chiselled curviliner patterns. Roofspace is inaccessible but feet of probably original A-frame truss show. An intriguing feature are what appears to be large blocked opposing doorways on the ground floor which may suggest that the cottage was converted from an earlier barn.
