Description

Riverside Cottage is a cottage built in the late 18th to early 19th century, with later extensions from the late 19th to early 20th century. It features plastered cob on rubble footings and stone rubble extensions, with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The original cottage has a one-room layout with an entrance lobby facing west and a formerly projecting right (south) end stack. There is a late 19th-century storage extension on the right end and an early 20th-century single-storey block at right angles to the front of the right end, which is now used as a kitchen. The main block is two storeys high with a symmetrical two-window front, featuring 20th-century casements with glazing bars to the right of the front wing. The central entrance has a 20th-century front door. The roof is hipped at both ends. The gable-ended front wing includes a 20th-century casement and a glass door, both with glazing bars. Inside, the cottage displays plain carpentry details, and the rubble fireplace has a replacement lintel. The roof has not been inspected. The front garden is enclosed by a low rubble wall, which includes a flight of steps leading down to the stream on the west side. Coleford is a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet.
