Description

A cottage dating from the 17th century, with alterations from the 19th century. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with a cob stack topped with 19th-century brick; the main house has a thatched roof, and a service outshot to the rear has a corrugated iron roof. The cottage is one room wide, facing north-west, with a rear service outshot. Homeleigh stands in a row of cottages, with Forge House to the north-east and Pennycott to the right. The main room’s stack is in the shared party wall with Forge House. The cottage has two storeys and a two-window front of 20th-century casements with glazing bars. A 20th-century door is on the right side, with a small window above. The roof is gable-ended to the left and continuous with the roof of Pennycott to the right. A 19th-century, rear service outshot has a lean-to roof with a lower pitch than the main room. Inside the main room, there is a roughly-finished, plain chamfered crossbeam and a stone rubble fireplace with a soffit-chamfered and scroll-stopped oak lintel, incorporating a large brick-lined oven on the right. The roof space was not inspected. The shared stack and back-to-back fireplaces suggest the cottage is contemporary with Forge House. It is likely to be contemporary with Pennycott and Corner Cottage, with which it forms a row of similar cottages. Coleford is a remarkably unspoiled and picturesque hamlet.
