Description
Corner Cottage is a cottage, possibly originally two dwellings, likely dating from the 17th century with 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with probable cob stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The cottage occupies a corner site with its main front facing north-west, featuring a front and rear room layout. A stack is located in the left-end wall, shared with the adjacent Pennycott, while the rear room has an end stack in a party wall with Cove Cottage. The front of the cottage has a central 19th-century six-panel door with panelled reveals, flanked by contemporary 16-pane hornless sash windows, with another window at first-floor level above the doorway. The front is flanked by the upper remains of panelled pilasters. The roof is continuous with Pennycott to the left and hipped to the right. The right side of the cottage features a two-window front with similar 16-pane sashes, although the ground-floor left sash is a horned replacement. The roof is gable-ended to the right on this side. The interior has not been inspected, but 17th-century features may be present, given the cottage’s apparent connection to a row of contemporary cottages including Pennycott and Homeleigh. Corner Cottage is situated within the remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet of Coleford.
