Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage, formerly two cottages, likely built in the late 18th to early 19th century. It features plastered cob on rubble footings, with a cob or rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The cottage has a three-room plan facing south, consisting of a former two-room cottage on the left (west) and a contemporary one-room cottage on the right (east). A large stack is positioned between the two former units, serving back-to-back fireplaces. Recessed at the right end is a small, narrow, full-height former store that has been converted into part of the domestic space. The cottage is two storeys high and has an overall three-window front with late 19th and 20th-century replacement casements featuring glazing bars. The larger left former cottage has a symmetrical two-window arrangement around a central door, which is sheltered by a 20th-century half-hipped thatch-roofed porch. The right former cottage has a one-window front with a 20th-century door at the right end, and the former store has 20th-century casements. The roof is hipped at both ends, and the store roof is also hipped. Inside, there is plain carpentry detail, including stone rubble fireplaces with plain oak lintels and simply finished crossbeams, one of which in the left room may be a replacement. The roof has not been inspected. Coleford is a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet.
