Description
Pheasant Cottage is a cottage, likely originally two separate dwellings, dating from the 18th century and modernised in 1986. The walls are plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with one end rebuilt in 19th century brick; it has one stone rubble stack and one brick stack, both topped with 19th and 20th century brick. The roof is thatched, with corrugated iron to one projecting section.
The cottage now functions as a two-room dwelling facing south, with end stacks. The western room was originally composed of two rooms and likely functioned as a separate cottage. It has a rear brick outshot. The eastern room is slightly recessed from the front of the western room. A former store, set back from the front on the eastern end, has been converted into a garage. There are two storeys. The front has an irregular arrangement of five windows with 20th-century casements containing glazing bars. The main doorway is now situated in the eastern room and features a 20th-century part-glazed door. A former doorway in the left end wall of the western room has been blocked and replaced with a window. The roof is gable-ended.
Inside, the visible carpentry is plain. The western room contains an axial beam with a plain soffit chamfer, supported by a 20th-century beam inserted where a partition was previously removed. This room has a stone rubble fireplace with a plain oak lintel. The other room has a brick fireplace. The roof space was not inspected.
The cottage is part of a group of buildings in an attractive hamlet.
