Description
Hill Farmhouse is likely 18th century, though it may have earlier origins and was refurbished in the 19th century, with 20th-century additions to the rear. The main structure is a three-room-and-cross-passage plan house facing south, built with plastered cob on stone rubble footings, and featuring stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and one Rolle Estate chimney pot. The cross passage is situated to the right (east) of the centre. The room to the right has an end stack, while the centre room includes a large, projecting rear lateral room. While the plan initially suggests a 16th or 17th-century design, the right room is set on a different axis, suggesting it might be an addition. Two 20th-century outshots extend to the rear. The main house is two storeys high, with an irregular four-window front featuring 19th and 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars. The front doorway has a 20th-century part-glazed plank door and a flat hood on shaped brackets. The roof abuts Pear Tree Cottage to the right and is half-hipped to the left. The interior was not accessible for inspection. Hill Farmhouse is part of a group of attractive buildings, set back from the front of Pear Tree Cottage which adjoins it on the right.
