Description

Pear Tree Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 18th century and includes a former shop. It was enlarged and refurbished in the late 19th century. The building features plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or brick stacks, and a thatched roof. Originally, it had a two-room plan with end stacks facing southeast. In the 19th century, a one-room extension that contained a shop was added to the left (southwestern) end, with the former end stack projecting into this extension. The cottage is two storeys high and has an irregular five-window front, featuring various 19th and 20th-century casements with glazing bars, including a larger window on the ground floor to the former shop. The original four-window section of the cottage is more regular but not symmetrical, with alternate first-floor windows being blind. Both doors, one leading to the cottage and another to the former shop, are from the 20th century. The roof butts against the neighbouring houses at each end, with the eaves dropping abruptly and the ridge gently sloping from the cottage to the former shop. The interior was not available for inspection at the time of the survey. Pear Tree Cottage is part of a group of attractive thatched buildings. It is set back from the front of Brook Cottage, which is adjacent to the right, but projects forward from Hill Farmhouse, which is adjacent to the left, and is aligned on a different axis from both.
