Description
The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design dating from the 20th century, made of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied rather than perforated. White display signs reading "TELEPHONE" are set beneath the shallow-curved roof. The kiosk contains modernised internal equipment and is in good condition.
It stands at the roadside in the east of the village, approximately 10 metres to the west of Lemprice Cottage (Grade II) and opposite The Cottage (Grade II). The kiosk has a significant visual relationship with these two listed buildings, and can be clearly seen in conjunction with them when approaching from either direction.
Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to mark King George V’s Silver Jubilee, the K6 was developed from his earlier K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924. It represents a streamlined, more compact, and more cost-effective design for mass production. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced; many were replaced in the 1960s, but they remain an iconic feature of Britain's streetscapes. The K2 and K6 kiosks demonstrate a thoughtful adaptation of architectural tradition to contemporary technological requirements. This example is designated at Grade II for its strong visual relationship with nearby listed buildings and as a representative example of an important 20th-century industrial design within a village setting.
