Description

Cove Cottage is a house that likely dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed from plastered cob on rubble footings, with a stone rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick and a slate roof. The cottage has a two-room plan and faces west, featuring an entrance hall and stairs at the left (north) end, with a stack in the right (south) end party wall. It is situated between Corner Corrage and Coleford Gospel Hall.

The cottage is two storeys high and has a balanced but not symmetrical front with two windows. The first floor includes two 16-pane sash windows, one of which on the right is a horned replacement, while the ground floor has a single 12-pane sash window in between. At the left end, there is a 19th-century plank door with a small window, along with late 19th-century railings and a gate that features alternating spear and fleur-de-lys finials. The rear elevation has one 19th-century 20-pane sash window, while the rest are 20th-century casements. The low-pitched roof extends continuously with the adjoining Gospel Hall.

Inside, there is little exposed carpentry, but there is a large stone rubble fireplace, now lined with brickette tile, that has a soffit-chamfered oak lintel. The roof has not been inspected. Cove Cottage is included for its group value, and Coleford is noted as a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet.
