Description

No. 75 Boutport Street, originally the Barnstaple and North Devon Dispensary, is a shop with accommodation above, built in 1833. The building has a solid rendered front and is three storeys high with a semi-basement. It features a three-window range, with a fourth window in a recessed section above a cart entrance on the right. The ground floor has horizontal channelling that gives a rusticated appearance. The deeply-recessed central door has six panels, with the top four now glazed. On either side of the door are square wooden bay windows from the late 19th century, each with an entablature, featuring 12 panes at the front and four on each side.

The upper-storey windows are flanked and separated by giant Doric pilasters, which rest on a raised band at the first-floor level and support an entablature. There is also a raised band at the second-floor level that connects the pilasters. The window pattern consists of barred sashes, with six-over-six panes on the second storey and three-over-six panes on the third storey. However, the two left-hand second-storey windows have been modified to fixed sashes with an opening section, and the left-hand window on the third storey has also been altered. The right-hand third-storey window has lost its glazing bars. The right side wall has a single window with four-paned sashes on the ground storey.

The cart entrance features a segmental arch with raised bands above it at the first and second-floor levels. There is a 20th-century two-light wood casement window on the second storey and a six-paned sash window on the third storey, topped with an entablature. The interior has not been inspected.
