Description

Ripon and District Hospital: Main Block is a former dispensary built in 1850. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate hipped roof with an ashlar parapet. The building has an ashlar plinth, raised quoins, raised first floor and cill bands, as well as a moulded eaves cornice. It is two storeys high.

The east front consists of a six-bay centre, which has a projecting two-bay section topped by an open pediment. There is a central round-headed doorway with double panel doors and a single plain fanlight, all set in a moulded ashlar surround with a keystone. On either side of the doorway are rusticated piers with a bracketed flat hood above, leading to single narrow round-headed margin light sashes with pilasters beyond. Above the frieze, the word 'DISPENSARY' is displayed in raised letters.

To either side of the central section are two glazing bar sashes in shouldered and eared ashlar surrounds with keystones. Above these, there are six glazing bar sashes in plain ashlar surrounds. The building also features a three-bay lower wing to the south, which has pairs of plain sashes in ashlar surrounds with pilaster strips in between. To the north, there is another lower wing with two single sashes and a pair of plain sashes, along with a panel door. Above this section are three single windows and a double window, all with plain ashlar surrounds.
