Description
Sherburn Hospital Dispensary is a former dispensary that has been converted into a community hall. It was built in 1883, as indicated by a date on a stained glass window in the left bay, with an early 20th-century addition at the rear. The building is constructed of tooled dressed sandstone, with engineering brick used for the rear and the addition, and it features a plain clay tile roof. Designed in the Tudor style, the structure has a shallow H-plan and is a single storey high.
The centre bay is flanked by slightly projecting cross-gabled bays. On the left half of the centre bay, there is a porch that features a three-centred arched moulded doorway, which is flanked by pilasters. Above the doorway, a frieze is inscribed with the words "SHERBURN HOSPITAL DISPENSARY." The windows are double-chamfered and ovolo-mullioned, with a three-light window to the right of the porch and four-light mullioned-and-transomed windows in the end bays, all under hoodmoulds. The left window is taller and contains stained glass.
The outer bays have small sunk panels in double-chamfered surrounds, with an armorial carving on the left and a carving of Christ as healer on the right. The gables are coped and feature finials at the apex and footstones. The roof is steeply pitched, with off-centre corniced ridge stacks. The left return has a two-bay section with a two-light window at the rear, while the right return has a slightly taller three-bay extension at the rear, designed in a similar style. There is a 20th-century range of garages on the right return, which are not of interest.
