Description

Whitwell Grange House is a farmhouse, now a private house, dating from the mid-to-late 18th century with an addition built around 1820. The house is constructed from coursed rubble, with the later addition featuring incised render and stone dressings. It has Welsh slate roofs and rebuilt brick chimney stacks. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with the original farmhouse positioned at right-angles to the rear of the later addition.

The circa 1820 two-storey, three-bay range has a chamfered plinth and raised-and-chamfered quoins. The central doorway has a doorcase with a four-panel double door. The windows are margined sashes in raised surrounds with projecting sills. The roof is low-pitched and hipped, with a central rendered stack. Deep one-bay returns feature identical fenestration. The lower, two-storey, three-bay 18th century farmhouse has roughly-squared quoins on the left side. A late 19th century gabled porch with a replaced door is centrally positioned. A blocked window sits above the door, flanked by margined sashes with wedge lintels and projecting sills. The roof has a stack at the left end. A single-storey outshut, with a pent roof, has been added to the rear of the original farmhouse.

The interior of the 18th century section features fielded six-panel doors and a late 18th century cast-iron fire grate in a bedroom. The circa 1820 addition has four-panel doors, panelled window shutters, and a dogleg staircase with ornamental cast-iron balusters. An L-shaped range of former farmbuildings, now a house called The Mews, is located on the left return of the 18th century farmhouse; it has been altered and is not considered to be of special interest.
