Description
The Keep, Castle Chambers, is a dispensary that is currently used as offices, likely built in 1878. It is constructed from snecked local grey limestone with Bathstone dressings and has a slate roof, featuring a stack with stone shafts and moulded cornices. The building is a small structure attached to the left end of the hospital.
The exterior is single storey with an asymmetrical two-window front. A shallow wing projects at the left end, topped with a coped gable and kneelers. There is a moulded stone eaves band on the main block. To the right of the wing, there is a moulded-arched doorway with carved spandrels, and a three-light high-transomed stone-mullioned window to the right of the doorway. The wing has a similar four-light window with a relieving arch.
The interior has not been inspected but may still have interesting features. The dispensary was established to provide working people with access to medical care for a small subscription, replacing a previous system of free medical attention. By 1883, it had become self-supporting with 2,580 contributing members.
