Description
56 Tor Hill Road is a villa dating from the 1830s. It is constructed of local grey limestone rubble, with stuccoed and blocked-out sections, and features a tiled roof with brick stacks and platbands. The building has a double-depth L-plan layout, consisting of two rooms wide, with the left end rounded. The entrance is located on the right, leading into a passage with a rear central stair, and there is a service wing at the rear left, positioned at right angles.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and presents an asymmetrical three-window front. It has a moulded eaves cornice and a round-headed doorway that features a recessed panelled door and a fanlight with spider's web glazing bars. The ground floor has two 12-pane early 19th-century sash windows, while the first floor has three. The curved left end of the house includes two small-pane bowed sashes, with the ground-floor window converted into a side-hung door.
Inside, the villa retains many original features, including plaster cornices and joinery such as skirtings, doors, and shutters. There is a stick baluster stair with a mahogany handrail, and the principal rooms have local pink polished limestone chimneypieces. The lesser rooms also feature original chimneypieces with grates.
