Description

Mulberry House is a house built in the late 1860s, located on Scarborough Road in Torquay. The building is rendered and features a hipped slate roof with stacks that have rendered shafts, platbands, and cornices. It has a deep rectangular plan situated on a corner site, with the entrance on the north-west side leading into a passage that contains the stair. The principal rooms are located at the front (south-west) facing Scarborough Road, while the services are at the rear.

The house is two storeys high and has deep eaves supported by modillion brackets. The entrance front has three windows and is symmetrical to the right, with a canted bay on the corner to the left. The central front door is framed by a doorcase with rounded corners, pilasters, and a cornice on modillion brackets, featuring a 4-panel door with a plain overlight. There are three first-floor and two ground-floor windows with moulded architraves and sills; the ground-floor windows have keyholes and are likely original 2 over 2-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars. To the left of the front, there are rusticated quoins, leading to a two-storey canted corner bay with triple windows, where the ground-floor centre window has been converted into a two-leaf door with an overlight, topped by a moulded cornice with modillion brackets. A similar bay is located to the left, facing Scarborough Road, also featuring rusticated quoins.

Inside, the house retains original chimneypieces and joinery, as well as a stair with turned balusters. Its important corner site is positioned between a listed terrace on Scarborough Road and other contemporary listed buildings on Croft Street.
