Description

This building, located at 55, 57, and 57A Rock Road in Torquay, is a house dating from the late 1860s to early 1870s. It features a plastered exterior and a hipped slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts and platbands. The house has a double-depth plan and is built into the cliff, with the ground floor functioning as a basement and a front door located on the south side at the first floor.

The building stands three storeys tall and has an eaves band with deep boarded eaves supported by large moulded brackets. There is a projecting sill band at the second floor and a first-floor balcony, likely a secondary feature, supported by large curved brackets. The east front has two windows, with round-headed ground-floor windows that have keyblocks and dripmoulds, glazed with 4-pane sashes. A similar window is found on the left return. The first and second-floor windows have rounded upper corners and are also glazed with 4-pane sashes, with the first-floor windows being taller and featuring projecting hoods on wrought-iron brackets. The first-floor balcony includes plain cross-braced panels.

Access to the front door on the first floor is via steps on the south return, leading to a round-headed doorway with a plain fanlight. The first-floor window on the right side is similar to those on the east front, while there is a canted bay to the left. Additionally, the centre window on the south side at the first floor has been converted into a front door for a flat. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
