Description

This early 19th-century house, now used as offices and shops, is located on the High Street in Barnstaple, with a return front to Maiden Street. The building is of solid rendered construction with a slated, hipped roof, featuring two late 20th-century red brick chimneys. It is three storeys high and originally comprised a three-window range, extended to a four-window range on the Maiden Street front, with a single window on the rounded corner.

The frontages have been altered with an early 20th-century shop front that extends onto both streets. This shop front incorporates panelled pilasters supporting an entablature with a panelled frieze and a carved block on consoles at its right-hand end. Display windows are fitted with transom lights featuring coloured leaded glass, including an "island" showcase on the corner. A recessed entrance is set back behind the shop front, with a mosaic pavement inscribed "Briggs & Compy".

A blank space on the Maiden Street front likely once contained a house door. The shop front terminates short of the adjacent party wall, with a later 20th-century shop front overlapping No. 107. Upper-storey windows retain their original design, with 6-over-9 sashes on the second storey and 6-over-6 sashes on the third. Some of the windows are blind: those in the middle of the High Street frontage, the middle pair on the second storey of the Maiden Street front, and the first and third windows from the right on the third storey of the Maiden Street front. A prominent cornice tops the entablature.

The interior of the building has not been inspected.
