Description
No. 3 High Street is a house and shop dating from the early to mid 19th century, constructed of red brick. The roof is not visible from the street. The building has a one-room-wide and two-rooms-deep plan, with a narrower rear room that includes a staircase compartment on the left-hand side. It stands three storeys tall and features a two-window range. The 20th-century shop front rises to the cills of the second-storey windows. The upper-storey windows have flat, gauged brick arches with painted keystones and are fitted with four-pane sashes that include margin-panes. Above each storey, there is a painted band, likely made of stone. The building has a modillioned eaves cornice. Notably, at the right-hand end of the second storey, there is a slate plaque inscribed "SITE OF SOUTH GATE. REMOVED 17TH CENTURY." A plain stone arch, which is part of the former gate, is preserved in the right-hand side wall and can be seen in a cupboard at No. 2 High Street.
Inside, the early or mid 19th-century interior has been altered in the 20th century, but it retains a moulded plaster cornice in the first-floor front room. The roof structure has not been inspected.
