Description
No. 69 on Boutport Street in Barnstaple is a building likely constructed in the 1870s or 1880s, originally serving as offices. It features painted brick with stone dressings and has a tiled mansard roof. There are rendered chimneys on each gable wall. The building stands three storeys tall with a garret and has a four-window range. The ground storey includes a shop front, flanked by pilaster strips that have carved corbels at the top, supporting rectangular blocks with small gabled tops. The display windows are divided by slender columns and topped with a tall frieze and moulded cornice.
The second-storey windows are adorned with segmental moulded stone arches and ogee hoodmoulds that have carved finials, which may feature a C, V, or an emblem. The third-storey windows have flattened, moulded ogee stone arches and plain sashes. There are string courses that create a pedestal effect at the second-floor level. The eaves cornice is carved and corbelled in stone, with bracketed blocks at each end that have gabled tops. Additionally, there are four hipped dormers with eaves that project on corbels. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
