Description

Hempster Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 18th century and was extended at the rear around 1900. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable end stacks, the right stack being taller and both having drips. Originally, the farmhouse had a two-room layout with a kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right, with a wide staircase in the central entrance passage. The circa 1900 extension added a new kitchen wing to the rear left side, creating an L-shaped plan. A dairy outshut in the angle was raised to two storeys in the 20th century. A former lofted outbuilding extending from the left gable end was incorporated into the dwelling in the 20th century. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-window range that is nearly symmetrical. All windows are 2-light casements, with 8 panes per light in the upper storey and 6 panes per light on the ground floor, except for the upper right-hand window, which was replaced in the 20th century. The central stone porch has a slate gabled roof and a six-panelled inner door. Inside, much of the 19th-century joinery remains intact. The left-hand room features a thin chamfered ceiling beam and has one cloam oven and one blocked oven in its fireplace.
