Description
Higher Trayne features garden piers, steps, and walls constructed around 1939-41 by Oliver Hill. The garden piers are triangular and faceted, made of dressed local stone, and they flank semi-circular stone steps that lead to the edge of the coombe. Drystone walls are attached, enclosing the gardens and creating an "Italian" garden to the north. The layout of the garden was designed to connect the house with the coombe, providing views of the sea and the Welsh coast. A series of small ponds cascade down the slope in front of the house, creating reflections. Higher Trayne is part of a group that includes the garden piers, steps, and walls.
