Description
The Olde Thatched Inn, which includes a pier and shed, is a detached cottage ornee that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the early 19th century and has an L-shaped plan. The building is rendered and features a large thatched, hipped roof with lunette dormers. The low eaves are supported by rough tree-trunks, creating a verandah effect. The central entrance has part-glazed timber doors from the 20th century, flanked by simple casement windows. At the rear, there is a slated lean-to. The interior has been altered.
There are subsidiary features including a small thatched shed to the right, which has an early 19th-century round-headed leaded window. In front of the shed, there is a stone pier with recessed pointed panels on each side, which originally housed a pump. This Repton style cottage ornee may have served as a lodge to Laston House on New Barnstaple Road. Laston House and the Olde Thatched Inn are part of a group of buildings.
