Description
Hillsborough Cottage is a mid-19th century building located on Larkstone Lane in Ilfracombe. It is constructed from stone rubble and features a roof covered with red "fishscale" tiles. The cottage has two red-brick chimneys, two of which have round and louvred chimney-pots. The layout consists of a double-depth plan with one long range and two shorter ranges at right angles, leaving space for an entrance porch at the west end. The design is in a Romantic Gothic style, with two storeys and multiple gables adorned with scalloped bargeboards and finials.
The main front, facing northwest, has twin gables and is two windows wide. All windows visible from the road are wooden casements with pointed arches and widely spaced horizontal glazing bars, including a canted bay window on the right side of the ground storey. The west front features similar details, including a doorway with a pointed stone arch and a plank door. The interior has not been inspected. Notably, the house does not appear on the Ilfracombe tithe map of 1840, although a non-domestic building is indicated in a similar location. Approximately 20 meters to the southeast, there is a summerhouse of a similar date to the cottage.
