Pair Of Lodges 700 Metres East Of Youlston Park

This pair of small gateway lodges, located 700 metres east of Youlston Park, dates from the late 18th century. They are constructed from ashlar stone and feature a pyramidal slate roof with a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The lodges have a square plan and include four pediments that project forward on each side. There are continuous impost and sill bands, and single niches on the east and west faces, each adorned with keystones depicting grotesque masks that hold oval urns on pedestals. The masks feature human heads with ram's horns flanking mythological figures on a drum. Low curved stone walls are positioned to the left and right of the lodges. Note that the 20th-century railings between the lodges are not included in the listing.
