Description

North Lodge with linking gates and gate piers is a pair of entrance lodges dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. The lodges are constructed from grey sandstone ashlar, with some areas painted. The roof is not visible behind the parapet.

These small square lodges are positioned on either side of the gates and gate piers and stand two storeys high. Each lodge features a plinth, corner piers with moulded plinths, a moulded cornice, and a parapet with moulded coping. There are round-arched recesses on the north and south sides, each with a fluted impost band and a moulded architrave. The south side has a round-arched glazing bar sash. The inner returns of each lodge have two bays, with the first floor featuring three-light wooden casements, a four-panelled door on the south side (with the lower two panels flush), and a blind doorway on the north side.

The rear of the western lodge has a one-storey lean-to and an integral lateral brick stack. The eastern lodge has undergone mid-20th century alterations, including a raised parapet, a cornice interrupted by modern casements, and a large two-storey addition at the rear.

The central wooden carriage gate is flanked by smaller wooden pedestrian gates. The square stone gate piers, along with half piers attached to the lodges, each have a moulded plinth, a fluted frieze, and a pyramidal cap. The interiors of the lodges have not been inspected. These lodges were previously the north entrance lodges to Hawkstone Hall and are depicted in this location on an estate map from around 1795. North Lodge refers to the two lodge buildings.
