Description

This is a pair of lodges, dating from circa 1794, with 20th-century additions. The lodges are constructed of ashlar gritstone, featuring advanced, chamfered quoins rising from a shallow, plain plinth. They have a moulded eaves cornice and projecting eaves beneath a pyramidal roof, slated in diminishing courses, with clay bonnetted ridge tiles and a central ashlar chimney stack. Built on a square plan, the main elevation is symmetrical. The southwest elevation has a central doorway now obscured by a gabled, 20th-century single-storey porch, which encloses an architrave surround and a fluted frieze to the doorway. The doorway has a 6-panel 19th-century door. Flanking windows are within architrave surrounds and keyblocks; the ground-floor sashes have 4 x 3 panes, and the first-floor sashes have 3 x 3 panes. The central opening above the keyblock is blind. The rear elevation has four windows in plainer surrounds, still with moulded heads and keyblocks. These lodges flank the gateway to the former Wingerworth Hall Estate and are a pair with another lodge. The attached 20th-century additions to the lodge are not included in the listing.
