Description

35 New Road is a lodge dated 1794, with 20th-century additions. It is built from ashlar gritstone and features advanced chamfered quoins, rising from a shallow plain plinth. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and projecting eaves beneath a pyramidal roof, which is slated in diminishing courses and has lead hip ridges, along with a central ashlar chimney cap. The lodge is square in shape and has a symmetrical main elevation.

The south-west elevation includes a central doorway flanked by stacked glazing bar sash windows. The doorway has an architrave surround and a fluted frieze that incorporates an oval plaque inscribed with 'H H 1794'. The door is a plain 19th-century four-panelled design. The flanking windows have architrave surrounds and keyblocks, with the ground-floor sashes having four panes by three panes, and the first-floor sashes having three panes by three panes. The central opening above the doorway is blind.

The rear elevation features four sash windows with simpler surrounds, but they still have moulded heads and keyblocks. This lodge is one of a pair of cottages that flank the entrance gateway to the Wingerworth Hall estate. The attached 20th-century additions to the lodge are not included in this listing.
