Description
Middle Winsham Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th or 17th century. It is constructed of rubble with a gable-ended slate roof. The building features a rubble stack with an upper part made of brick at the higher gable end, and a large lateral rubble hall stack at the front, which has a concrete capping. The farmhouse originally had a three-cell cross-passage plan, but the lower end was demolished around 1940. All the windows are from the 20th century.
At the lower end, there is a cross-passage plank door with two leaves, accompanied by a 20th-century porch. Inside, the ceiling beams are chamfered and have unusually ornate carved foliated end stops. There is a newel staircase located at the rear of the hall, featuring a shaped wooden handrail. The stair turret has been extended to the upper gable end, forming a rear outshut with a lean-to roof.
Adjoining the farmhouse to the south are 19th-century stables and outbuildings that are positioned at right angles. These include a slated cart entrance canopy supported on a chamfered and stopped beam. The stable range is made of rubble, roughly coursed along the roadside, and has a corrugated asbestos roof. Facing the yard, there are three plank doors and a window with a brick arch, along with a loft door above.
