Description
Thorn Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, although it has been significantly modernised and re-fronted in the 20th century. The building features rendered granite rubble walls and a slate roof with gable ends. It has rendered stacks, with a central axial stack that has a brick shaft on a stone base, a right-hand gable stack made of stone with drip-moulds, and a left-hand gable stack that is brick. The layout probably consists of three rooms with a through passage, and the hall stack backs onto the passage. There is a 17th-century newel staircase that projects at the rear of the hall. The doorway to the passage at the rear is now blocked. A 20th-century wing has been added at the rear of the higher end of the building. The farmhouse is two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical front with five windows, which are 2-light 20th-century casements without glazing bars. The passage door is located to the left of centre and is set in a 20th-century rendered gabled porch with a plank door. At the rear of the hall, there is a rectangular stair projection with a small window, and to its left is a 20th-century two-storey flat-roofed wing. The interior was inaccessible during the survey, but the hall was noted to contain an open fireplace, with the newel stairs located at the rear of the room.
