Description
Westcott Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, which was renovated around 1970. The front of the building features exposed granite stone rubble, while the other sides are plastered. It has granite stacks with plastered brick chimney shafts, and the roof is thatched. The original layout was a three-room-and-through-passage plan, facing south, with the inner room located on the left (western) end. Both the inner and service rooms have gable-end stacks, and the hall features an axial stack that backs onto the former passage. The front passage doorway is now blocked by a window. An internal inspection was not possible during the survey, so the early development of the house is unclear, but it is likely that it began as an open hall house. A straight join at the first floor level may indicate the blocking of the original hall window. The farmhouse is now two storeys high.
The exterior has an irregular three-window front with 1970s casements that include glazing bars, and the roof is gable-ended. The entrance is now through a rear doorway in the passage, which has a 20th-century porch. The rear of the house features one 18th-century or early 19th-century casement window with rectangular panes of leaded glass, some of which are small and very old. The other rear windows are 20th-century replacement casements that also contain leaded glass. Although the interior was not available for inspection, a mid-17th-century soffit-chamfered crossbeam and scratch-moulded joists were observed in the hall, suggesting that the house likely contains additional 16th and 17th-century features.
