Description

House. Dated 1692, it may incorporate an earlier structure, with refurbishment and partial rebuilding occurring in the mid to late 18th century, and modernisation in 1972. The house is constructed of plastered granite rubble, with granite stacks topped with 18th and 20th-century brickwork, and a thatched roof. Originally a two-room plan, facing west, it features a central through-passage. Gable end stacks are present, the left one projecting, with each room containing a staircase to the rear of the fireplace. Rear outshots are present, the one behind the right-hand room being original. The right-end wall was rebuilt in the 18th century. The main house is two storeys high, presenting a symmetrical three-window front with 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars. The central front passage door now has a 20th-century plank door. Small gables are positioned above the first-floor windows. A crudely executed inscription, "WN E" with the date 1698, is above the central gable, and a similar inscription records the 1972 modernisation on the left gable. The plaster render is lightly inscribed to resemble ashlar, except where patched. The roof is gable-ended and the left stack displays weathered offsets. The right (south) side is the 18th-century rebuild, with the casements here having brick segmental arches above. Interior access was limited during survey, revealing oak plank-and-muntin screens with shallow-moulded muntins lining the passage. The left room has a plain soffit-chamfered crossbeam, and the fireplace is blocked by a 20th-century grate. The other rooms and the roof were not inspected. Great Weeke Cottage is one of several listed buildings within the hamlet of Great Weeke.
