Description

Whiteabury Cottage is a mid-17th century cottage located in Chagford, constructed from plastered granite rubble. It features a granite rubble stack with a plastered brick chimney shaft and a thatched roof. The cottage has a two-room plan and faces southeast. The larger room on the left (southwestern) side has a projecting end stack, and the original staircase was positioned alongside the fireplace. There are modern stairs in a wide central through passage, and the right room has an inserted end stack. An outshot at the rear of the right room may be original. The main house is two storeys high.

The exterior showcases an irregular three-window front with 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The central passage doorway features a 20th-century plank door, and the roof is gable-ended. There is a likely 19th-century woodshed at the right end with a lean-to roof covered in asbestos slates, while the rear outshot has a slate roof.

Inside, much of the 17th-century fabric remains intact. The main room on the left has soffit-chamfered crossbeams with late step stops, matching the oak lintel of the granite fireplace. The roof consists of 17th-century A-frame trusses, with one truss exposed enough to reveal that it is lap-jointed onto a vertical post buried in the wall. The roof space was not examined, and most of the joinery detail is from the 20th century.
