Description

Easton Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with possible earlier elements. It features walls made of granite stone rubble and a roadside gable of coursed granite ashlar, while the front is plastered and one section may be cob. The cottage has granite stacks with plastered brick stacks and a thatch roof. The layout consists of a two-room plan facing east, where the right (northern) room has an axial stack backing onto the left room, which has an end stack with stairs rising alongside. This cottage may have originally been part of a farmhouse with the adjoining Yonder Thatch, although both have appeared to be self-contained dwellings since the 17th century. The right room projects slightly forward from the left room and has a slightly higher roof, suggesting possible earlier development.

The exterior has an irregular three-window front with 19th and 20th century casements, most featuring glazing bars. The current doorway is located in the left room and contains a 20th-century door, while the ground floor window of the right room appears to block a former doorway. The roof is hipped to the right and gabled to the left, with the ashlar gable end being blind.

Inside, only the ground floor was accessible during the survey. Both rooms have granite fireplaces with soffit-chamfered oak lintels. All beams are soffit-chamfered with step-stops, including two crossbeams in the left room and an axial beam in the right room. An inspection of the roof may provide further insights into the development of this interesting small cottage from the 17th century or earlier.
