Description
CHAGFORD EASTON SX 78 NW
4/104 Easton Cottage -
GV II
Cottage. Late C16-early C17, possibly earlier in part. Walls of granite stone rubble and roadside gable of coursed granite ashlar, the front is plastered and one section may be cob; granite stacks with plastered brick stacks; thatch roof. Plan: 2-room plan cottage facing east. The right (northern) room has an axial stack backing onto the left room and the left room has an end stack with the stairs rising alongside. This cottage may once have formed a farmhouse together with adjoining Yonder Thatch (q.v.) although both seem to have been self-contained dwellings since the C17. The right room of this cottage projects forward very slightly from the left room and its roof is slightly higher too which might suggest some development earlier than the C17. 2 storeys. Exterior: irregular 3-window front of C19 and C20 casements, nearly all with glazing bars. The present doorway is set in the left room and contains a C20 door but the ground floor window of the right room can be seen to be blocking a former doorway. Roof is hipped to right and gabled to left. The ashlar gable end is blind. Interior: only the ground floor was available for inspection at the time of this survey. Both rooms have granite firepalces with soffit-chamfered oak lintels. All the beams are soffit-chamfered with step-stops; 2 crossbeams in the left room and an axial beam in the right room. An inspection of the roof may throw more light on the development of this interesting small C17 (or earlier) cottage.
