Description

Sundale Cottage is a cottage dating from the early to mid 17th century, possibly with earlier origins. The walls are of plastered local stone rubble, possibly incorporating some cob, with stone rubble stacks. The roof is thatched. Originally, the cottage comprised two rooms, facing south. The smaller eastern room was originally unheated but now contains a 20th-century heating stack. The larger western room has an axial stack backing onto the smaller room. A central front lobby provides access to the side of the main stack. A 20th-century service extension has been added to the rear of the western room. The front elevation is nearly symmetrical, with three windows containing 20th-century casements with glazing bars. Dormer windows are set into the roof. A centrally placed front doorway is protected by a contemporary thatched porch on plain posts, and leads to a part-glazed door. The roof is tall and steeply pitched, with half-hips at each end. Some 17th-century carpentry was observed, though an internal inspection was not possible. The western room contains a chamfered and step-stopped crossbeam and a large stone fireplace with an oak-framed front. The eastern room has two axial beams with deep chamfers. The roof structure may offer evidence of earlier origins for the cottage.
