Description
Lower Hookney Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely has origins in the 16th century, but the earliest surviving features date from the 17th century. The building has undergone significant alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of rendered granite rubble with a scantle slate roof featuring gable ends. The farmhouse has rendered stacks, with a central stone stack that has drip-moulds, positioned slightly in front of the ridge.
The layout consists of three rooms and a through passage, with the hall stack backing onto the passage. The passage and lower end are set back from the hall and inner room, suggesting that the lower end may have been rebuilt or that the hall and inner room were extended at some point. There are 19th and 20th-century outshuts at the rear. The house has been extensively modernised in the 20th century and is two storeys high.
The front facade is asymmetrical with four windows, featuring 20th-century casements of one, two, and three lights with glazing bars in small openings. A part-glazed 20th-century door leads to the passage, located to the right of the centre where the wall begins to set back. A lean-to porch roof over the door is supported by a wooden post. At the rear, there is likely a 19th-century rendered stone outshut at the higher end and a 20th-century weatherboarded outshut at the lower end.
Inside, although the basic plan has been maintained, most early features have been removed or replaced. However, the roof still contains 17th-century trusses with collars halved onto the principals.
