Description
Coryton Barton is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and a 19th-century rear wing. The building is constructed of stone rubble, which is whitewashed and rendered at the front. It features a slate roof that is hipped at the right end and gabled at the left end, with a rendered stack on the ridge and a brick shaft at the rear. The layout consists of two or three rooms with a through passage, and the stack backs onto the passage. An inner room was added or rebuilt around the 19th century, and a room at the lower end is now heated by a likely 19th-century rear lateral stack. The rear wing, added in the 19th century, creates a T-plan.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with four windows. It includes a gabled stone porch that features a 19th-century plank door with a cover strip, leading into the passage. There is also a 20th-century front door and a glazed porch on the left side. A change in the plane of the front suggests rebuilding or an addition at the higher end of the 17th-century hall. The ground floor has two three-light casement windows, each with four panes per light, and there are four similar windows on the first floor, all with slate sills.
Inside, there is a large fireplace at the stack on the ridge, which has an unmoulded timber lintel and a cloam oven. One of the cross beams is chamfered and has ogee stops. The remains of a newel stair can be found in a cupboard next to the fireplace, and the rear door of the passage has been blocked. The main block features a pegged collar rafter roof.
