Description

Portlemouth Barton is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and has been altered in the 19th century. The building features slatestone rubble walls and a concrete tile roof with stone coped gables, while the rear wing has a hipped slate roof. There are two rendered brick stacks, one at the left gable end and one axial. The original plan likely consisted of three rooms, but the right-hand end of the house has either been altered or is a later addition, with a 19th-century wing added at the rear.

The exterior presents an asymmetrical front with five windows, featuring 16-pane sashes on the first floor, all with horns except for one earlier 19th-century sash. At the right-hand end, there is an early 20th-century 6-pane sash on each floor. The right side of the house projects slightly and includes a 19th-century 6-panel door beneath a slate pentice. The left side has a late 18th-century or early 19th-century tripartite 20-pane sash to its right and a horned 16-pane sash to the left. Between these is a 20th-century stone open-fronted porch that contains an early 19th-century 6-panel door.

Inside, the farmhouse has been somewhat altered in the 19th and 20th centuries, with most earlier features concealed. However, it still displays 17th-century chamfered ceiling beams with bar stops.
