Description
Middle Middlecott Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely a former Dartmoor farmhouse, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, which was modernised around 1960. It is constructed from plastered granite stone rubble with granite stacks topped with 20th-century brick, and features a thatch roof that is covered with corrugated iron and tiles at the rear. The building has a three-room-and-through-passage plan typical of Dartmoor longhouses, facing south-south-east down a hillslope. The inner room is located at the left (western) end and includes an end stack, while the hall has an axial stack that backs onto the passage. The shippon was converted for domestic use around 1960, and a staircase of the same date is located in the rear outshot. The full development of the interior is unclear due to limited access during the survey, but it is likely that the hall was open to the roof in the 16th century. The farmhouse is two storeys throughout.
The exterior features an irregular four-window front with 20th-century casements that have glazing bars; the first-floor windows are adorned with low thatch eyebrows. The front passage doorway, located to the right of centre, contains a 19th-century plank door with cover strips and is sheltered by a 20th-century porch with a monopitch slate roof. The roof is half-hipped on the left and hipped on the right.
Interior access was limited during the survey, but it was noted that the hall fireplace dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, with hollow-chamfered sides and a replacement lintel. The crossbeam is from the 17th century and is soffit-chamfered. The shippon retains unfinished crossbeams from the old hayloft. Although the roof was not inspected, it is reported to contain ancient timbers.
