Description
Batworthy Mill is a pair of grist mills dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are constructed from granite stone rubble with large, roughly-dressed granite quoins and feature a slate roof. The mills are arranged on either side of a mill race and are powered by two overshot water wheels. Each mill has a basement, a stone floor, and a top storage floor. The rear of the mills is built into a steep slope, allowing for direct loading into the top floors from a terrace.
The left (western) mill, likely from the 18th century, is positioned slightly forward of the right mill and is powered by the front water wheel. The front (south) side of the left mill has a ground floor doorway and a window in the gable, while the inner side features a two-window front, all without window frames. An open-fronted extension was added to the rear in the 19th century for loading and unloading.
The right (eastern) mill has a first-floor loading hatch at the front, topped with a gabled 20th-century hood, and two 20th-century casement windows above, which also appear on the inner side. Both mills have gable ends. Inside, the mills display plain carpentry details. The left mill features a probable 18th-century roof with pegged A-frame trusses, while the right mill has a mid to late 19th-century roof with tie beam trusses and queen struts. The front water wheel is made of 19th-century cast iron, but the machinery in the left mill has been removed. The rear wheel is from the 20th century, and the right mill contains some cast iron machinery.
