Description

No. 109 on Boutport Street is an office building constructed in 1865. It features painted brick with stone or cement dressings and has a slated roof topped with red ridge tiles. There are cream-coloured brick chimneys on each side wall.

The building stands three storeys tall and has a five-window range. The ground floor is arranged in five bays, separated by pilasters that support an entablature. The narrower end bays each have a round-arched doorway with a moulded archivolt and a carved keystone. The doors consist of three vertical panels, with the center panel featuring a circular design that holds a brass handle shaped like a hand clenching a bar. The windows in the three central bays are made up of mullioned-and-transomed lights, with the mullions designed as fluted and twisted iron columns. Above these windows, the frieze has raised panels, two of which are circular and adorned with floral decorations.

The upper-storey windows are segmental-headed, featuring moulded brick arches and keystones, along with moulded cills. The two end bays are flanked by pilasters, and there is a raised brick band at the second-floor level. The building is topped with a coved eaves cornice. The interior has not been inspected.

This building was erected for the Barnstaple Bridge Trust and is noted as an early example of provincial office architecture. It is included for its group value.
