Description
No. 89 Southwark Street is a warehouse and office building, now used entirely as offices, dating from around 1880. It is constructed of grey brick with red brick courses and fine stone detailing. The roof is obscured by a brick parapet. The building stands four storeys high and has an eight-window range. The elevation features a round-arched base, with the upper floors set back behind giant piers topped with a cornice at roof level. All upper-floor windows are flat-arched and divided by colonnettes. The top floor windows are topped with a large stone lintel supported by the main piers. The first and second-floor windows have their own stone lintels beneath decorative relieving arches made of red and grey brick. The arches above the first-floor windows also feature stone rosettes set in square frames, highlighted by red tiled surrounds. Similar rosettes decorate the ground floor piers. All the glazing is original, but the doors at either end of the building were replaced in the 20th century. A large hoist bracket is located between the sixth and seventh bays of the first floor. The building's most distinctive feature, aside from its "stripped" Classical style, is the subtle use of contrasting textures and colors, contributing to a refined commercial design. It was built after the layout of Southwark Street was established between 1863 and 1865.
