Description
Hopton's Almshouses, located on Hopton Gardens, were built between 1746 and 1749 by Thomas Ellis and William Cooley, following designs by Mr. Batterson, a trustee of Charles Hopton's will and a builder. The almshouses are constructed from brick with rusticated stone quoins and feature tiled roofs with overhanging eaves, which are hipped at the ends; some roofs have been renewed.
The layout consists of two linked blocks that form the northern range of what was originally 28 almshouses, arranged around three sides of a garden. The western end of the range, originally numbered 1-3, is a C-shaped block that was rebuilt after suffering war damage and is now adapted as six dwellings. This block is connected by a brick arch to another range, originally consisting of four almshouses (now numbered 7-9). All buildings were modernized and reopened in 1988.
The exterior features two storeys with two bays for each unit, although some doors have been replaced with windows. The ground-floor openings have segmental, gauged red brick arches, and there are sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals on both floors. The interior has not been inspected.
